Rodon looked solid to start the game, but as the night went on, he struggled to find the plate, giving up a two-run home run to Campbell in the fifth inning. and a three run home run to Narvarez in the sixth inning. Both home runs followed walks.
The Yankees got off to a hot start offensively, with a Rice single and a Judge 2-run home run, giving the Yankees an early 2–0 lead.
After the Red Sox tied the game, DJ LeMahieu came up and untied the score with a solo shot, making it 3–2 NYY.
Fernando Cruz was the first out of the bullpen, loading the bases with two outs, before getting pulled for Tim Hill. Hill comes on and after a missed call from the HP umpire, gives up a 2-run single, making it 7–3 Boston.
The Yankees got two runs back in the bottom of the sixth inning after loading the bases with one out, Jazz hit a sac fly and Grisham took a bases loaded walk, making it 7–5 BOS.
Jonathan Loáisiga pitched a 1–2–3 seventh inning, but came on in the seventh and gave up back-to-back home runs to Toro and Story, making it 9–5 Boston.
NOTE: This is the second time this season the Yankees have pushed Loáisiga two innings, and both times it backfired on Aaron Boone.
The Yankees started a rally in the 8th inning off Zach Kelly, with a single by Goldschmidt and a double by Volpe, putting two in scoring position with one out, but Grisham struck out and LeMahieu lined out to end the threat.
Devers, of course, goes deep of Headrick for the second time this series, putting the game away in the ninth by making it 10–5.
Headrick would then give up an RBI single, making it 11–5 BOS. Hamilton would come on and issue a walk, but got a groundout to end the inning. The only reliever to not give up an earned or inherited run for the Yankees tonight.
Wells reached with a leadoff walk, Rice gave one a ride that is probably gone on any other night, and Judge hit one into the Yankees bullpen, his 23rd of the year, but the Yankees still trialed by four with one man out.
Bellinger walked, but Goldschmidt struck out, then after a Jazz walk, Chapman came on to face Volpe and he subsequently struck out to end the game.
The Yankees losing two out of three games to the Red Sox is particularly disappointing, considering Boston’s struggles throughout the 2025 season. More concerning is that the Yankees will travel to Fenway Park for another series next weekend.
This series underscored the Yankees’ need to acquire both a starting pitcher and an additional bullpen arm before the trade deadline. Offensively, the Yankees performed well enough to win at least two of the three games; however, it was the pitching staff that failed to deliver.
