BOSTON, MA — Yankees manager Aaron Boone told the media on Friday that shortstop Anthony Volpe will likely not start in the weekend series at Fenway Park.
Volpe has been struggling as of late, both offensively and defensively, sparking the conversation that deadline acquisition Jose Caballero should receive more playing time at the position.
It was also reviled yesterday in a report by Joel Sherman of the New York Post that Anthony Volpe received a cortisone shot in his left shoulder after an injury on May 3rd. The Yankees confirmed on Thursday that Volpe did in fact receive a cortisone shot in his shoulder not just on Wednesday, but also during the all-star break. Aaron Boone also confirmed that Volpe has been playing with a partial torn librium since May.
The Yankees are holding out hope that Volpe can be an impactful player going down the stretch, and history has proven that Volpe plays much better after getting a break.
“Like hopefully, in the next few days, he gets through this and he’s back in the mix.” Boone said on Friday “We saw him really turn it on the postseason, some of his best baseball. Hopefully that’s still ahead of him.”
