THE BRONX, NY — Instant Reaction to the Yankees 3-1 loss to the Red Sox in Game one of the Wild Card Series, and now are facing elimination tomorrow.

  • Max Fried opened things off by working a 12-pitch scoreless first inning against the Red Sox lineup. Volpe also made a really nice play on a ground ball to open up the game.

  • The Yankees opened up the bottom of the first inning with back-to-back singles off Crochet, but a strikeout by Bellinger and a Stanton double play erases what looked to be a promising start to the game.

  • Max Fried then worked a 1-2-3 second inning on just nine pitches. Four of his first six out were on ground balls, the other two were strikeouts.

  • After getting two quick outs, Anthony Volpe parks a solo home run off Garret Crochet to give the Yankees an early 1-0 lead over Boston. In a small sample size, Volpe has shown a flair for the dramatic in the postseason.

  • After the Yankees gave him a 1-0 lead, Max Fried worked a scoreless third inning around a one-out single by nine-hitter Nick Sogard. Cody Bellinger also made a nice play to keep Sogard to a single, though he tagged up on a flyout by Refsnyder that Grisham did not get in in time.

  • The Yankees put some really good at-bats on Garret Crochet in the third inning, but to no avail as the Yanks went down 1-2-3 in the frame. Judge looked locked in during his at-bat, but flew out just missing on a cutter.

  • Max Fried got two quick outs before the home plate umpire Junior Valentine missed two big pitches, resulting in a two-out walk. Then, a bloop double put Fried in trouble, before Duran struck out after being up 3-0 in the count to end the inning.

  • The Yankees let Crochet get into a rhythm after the Volpe Home Run, retiring the next seven batters he faced, and sending the Yankees down 1-2-3 again.

  • Max Fried got two quick outs in the fifth before issuing a two-out walk, and was in further trouble with a two-out infield single that Volpe wisley gave up on. Fried got Alex Bregman to chop out on a nice running play by Caballero to end the threat.

  • The Yankees were once again retired 1-2-3 in the fifth inning, all on strikes.

  • Max Fried threw 20 pitches in the sixth inning after getting hosed on a few calls to Carlos Narvaez for the second time tonight. Fried then gets Nate Eaton to ground into an inning-ending 4-4-3 double play to preserve the 1-0 lead.

  • The Yankees went down 1-2-3 in the sixth inning, though some balls were hit super hard. Crochet has retired 13 straight batters since the Volpe homer in the second inning. The Yankees recorded just three baserunners across the first six innings, with one being erased by a double play.

  • Max Fried and Paul Goldschmidt combined for a beautiful play to ends Fried’s night.

  • Luke Weaver was the first out of the bullpen and did not record an out. After getting ahead of Raffiella 0-2, Weaver walked him on 11 pitches, before a double by Sogard and a pinch-hit two-run single by Yoshida to give Boston the lead. Weaver has been horrific against Boston in his career with the Yankees pitching to the tune of a 6.08 ERA in 12 games.

  • Fernando Cruz came in to clean up Weaver’s mess and after Nathaniel Lowe gave one a ride after a two-out walk, Judge was there to keep this a 1-run game.

  • The Yankees went down on six pitches in a lifeless 1-2-3 seventh inning after losing the lead.

  • Devin Williams issued a four-pitch walk to lead off his outing, but retired the next three in order for a scoreless inning.

  • The Yankees actually had a baserunner in the eighth inning for a change with a one-out single by Volpe, who was 2-3 against Crochet tonight. Wells would strike out looking on Crochet’s 117th pitch, before Chapman came in to face Caballero who flew out to end the inning.

  • David Bednar came in for the top of the ninth inning, looking to keep this a one-run game, and could not do that, giving up a two-out single and then a two-out RBI double to give Boston a huge insurance run.

  • The Yankees loaded the bases with no outs against Chapman and could not score. Stanon strikes out, Jazz flies out and Grisham stirkes ojut swinging to end it.

The Yankees will send Carlos Rodon to the mound tomorrow against a Boston lineup that has gotten to him a few times this season. the Yankees will face Brayan Bello, who has been outstanding against the Yankees this season, will go for Boston.
