NEW YORK — Manager Aaron Boone provided some pregame updates on some injury and roster news for the coming days/weeks.

Giancarlo Stanton

Giancarlo Stanton is out of the lineup today for the third straight day, which is a big hit to their offensive potential. Aaron Boone said that Stanton has a “good chance” to play right field tomorrow. Stanton has primarily served as a designated hitter in recent seasons, but a return to the field could add flexibility to the Yankees’ lineup and open up new offensive combinations, and allow Judge to DH for as long as he needs.

Stanton will likely be limited to certain places in the outfield due to field conditions or demotions (right field at Yankee Stadium and GMS, left field in Houston and Boston, etc.)

Austin Slater

Newly acquired outfielder Austin Slater is expected to miss 4–6 weeks due to a hamstring injury. Slater was brought in to provide depth and a right-handed bat against lefties, but the setback will delay his contribution and test the Yankees’ outfield depth early on.

Fernando Cruz and Ryan Yarborough

Two relievers are progressing well as they look to return from injuries. Ryan Yarbrough and Fernando Cruz are both scheduled to face live hitters on Sunday, a key step in their return to game action. Their availability could be crucial for a Yankees bullpen that has faced ups and downs throughout the season.

Yarbrough could also provide an option as a long reliever, or a starter if needed as the season goes on. Yarbrough will be an important piece for the Yankees to use down the stretch and into the postseason.

Gerrit Cole

Ace Gerrit Cole is expected to begin his throwing program this month. The 2023 AL Cy Young winner has been working his way back from Tommy John Surgery with the goal to return by the 2026 All Star Break, and beginning a throwing routine is a major milestone. The Yankees will be closely monitoring his progress.
