Takeaways

The Offense

The offense was sound asleep today. There were a few innings where the Yankees had a chance but they either stranded the baserunners or made boneheaded base running plays to cost the Yankees. The Yankees had 2 hits. That’s it.

There was also this very inconspicuous baserunning play in the second inning where Jazz Chisholm Jr. got doubled off — on a routine pop out.

Jazz Chisholm Jr. told the media that he thought second basemen, Xavier Edwards, was going to drop the ball on purpose, and he did not. Chisholm Jr. noted that he would not execute that mistake again.

There was also a questionable send in the first inning that manager Aaron Boone called “a little too aggressive” more than once in his postgame media availability. When I saw the play, I was questioning why third base coach, Luis Rojas sent Grisham who is not known for his blinding speed.

Alex Rodriguez on the send by Rojas “what are we doing here?”

The Yankees were also not as aggressive on the basepaths today as they were yesterday. I thought there were a few spots where runners should have been stealing to either get into scoring position or to just throw off the pitcher, Eury Pérez, who to his credit was dealing today.

Starting Pitching Analysis

Cam Schlittler delivered a solid performance on the mound today, showing noticeable improvement from his previous outing. The right-hander allowed just two runs over his appearance, both coming via solo home runs off the bat of Augustine Ramirez. Outside of those two blemishes, Schlittler maintained control of the game and kept opposing hitters off balance with improved command and more consistent execution of his pitches.

Compared to his last start, Schlittler appeared more poised and in rhythm, working efficiently through the lineup and avoiding the kind of prolonged innings that have occasionally troubled him in the past. His fastball had better life, and he was able to spot it effectively to both sides of the plate. He also mixed in his offspeed pitches with greater confidence, helping to limit hard contact and induce weak grounders and popups. All in all, it was a promising step forward for Schlittler, who continues to make a case for a more regular role as he develops at the next level.

Schlittler is going to be a good starter in this league for a long time.

Bullpen Usage

The bullpen was not an issue today. Bird and Weaver both had perfect innings and Hill worked a 1-2-3 inning after a walk and a double play. A far cry from last night’s game. The bullpen looked much improved, but one day the offense is strong and the bullpen can’t get an out and the following game was the opposite. There needs to be more consistency.
