NEW YORK — Aaron Boone provided some injury and roster notes today on the Talkin’ Yanks podcast with Jomboy and Jake. To listen to the full podcast, see below.
Gerrit Cole
Gerrit Cole Took a significant rehabilitation step post-Tommy John surgery by beginning a throwing program. On Monday, he threw 20 pitches off flat ground, marking his first time throwing since undergoing surgery on March 11. Manager Aaron Boone recognized this as a major milestone in his recovery.
Fernando Cruz and Ryan Yarbrough
Both Fernando Cruz and Ryan Yarbrough are slated to begin rehab assignments on Thursday with the Somerset Patriots. Boone noted that Cruz will go on Thursday, Sunday and Tuesday and should be in line to return during the four-game series against the Red Sox — which is the perfect time to give the bullpen some more depth. No timeline was provided for Yarbrough due to the fact that his buildup will be longer.
Austin Wells
Austin Wells has been riding the struggle bus for a while now, and manager Aaron Boone decided to give Wells back-to-back off days after his Sunday start behind the plate as sort of a reset. Boone continues to show confidence in Wells and that his performance will improve. Ben Rice has been receiving more reps behind the plate, so I wonder if Wells’ prolonged slump will lead to Rice and Wells splitting the starting catcher’s role.
Aaron Judge
Judge will remain a DH through the remainder of his homestand, extending his throws to 120 feet yesterday. Boone noted that it is a “possibility” that Judge returns to the outfield durning the five-game road trip to St. Louis (three games) and Tampa Bay (two games).
Amed Rosario
Placed on the 10-day injured list after suffering a sternoclavicular joint sprain when he collided with an unpadded section of the outfield wall. Boone and Rosario expressed optimism about a return after the 10-days are up.
Devin Williams
It is no secret that Devin Williams has had an awful season so far in 2025, and due to his issues in high-leverage spot, Boone confirmed on Tuesday that Williams will be slotted in low-leverage roles going forward. This will be easier once Fernando Cruz is activated at the end of next week.
