THE BRONX, NY — The Yankees are going into Game Two against the Red Sox tomorrow, looking to keep their season going. While the performance on the field will be one of the big stories, there is also some drama in the Yankees clubhouse.
Jazz Chisholm Jr. did not start tonight’s game against the Red Sox due to the platoon advantage of the lefty on the mound, Crochet, in Boston. Chisholm told the media that Boone sent him a text last night to alert him that he would not be in the lineup today. Boone conducted the entire media availability with his back to the reporters during his presser, seemingly as a sign of protest to his own decision.
“I guess,” Chisholm said when he was asked if he was surprised to be out of the lineup today.
When asked if Chisholm Jr. spoke to Boone after the game, he said, “It’s a little conversation after it. Not much. Just move forward after it.”

Aaron Boone also made some really bad decisions tonight, the biggest being not keeping his ace, Max Fried, in to face the bottom of the Red Sox lineup. Fried looked really good today, aside from a few jams that were not entirely his fault, including some questionable calls from home plate umpire Junior Valentine. Fried got Jarren Duran to ground out to lead off the eighth inning, then Boone came to get him. Luke Weaver came in and was totally ineffective, surrendering a walk, a double, and a two-run single to give Boston the lead they would never surrender.
In his postgame media availability, Max Fried said he “felt good” after the sixth inning, adding, “I’m going to stay in until I get the ball taken from me.”
“I definitely exerted a lot of energy trying to get out of that, but I definitely had enough in the tank for whatever the team needed,” Fried said.
“I wanted him to go out and get Duran and felt like we were lined up,” Boone said after the game. The Yankees bullpen was so lined up that they gave up three runs, and every reliever except Bednar surrendered a walk.
On the other side, the Yankees offense floundered against Garrett Crochet, who retired 17 in a row at one point and was left in the game at 117 pitches. One of the biggest missteps from Boone was not riding his ace, which Alex Cora — who managed circles around Boone tonight — did with Crochet, and it paid off.
I wish more people understood that if Crochet were a Yankee tonight, Aaron Boone would have pulled him at 100 pitches for Weaver and lost this game.

The Yankees will now send Carlos Rodón out tomorrow looking to avoid elimination, with Brayan Bello pitching for Boston. Important to note, Bello has really good numbers in his career against the Yankees. In 11 games, Bello has a 5–4 record with a 2.35 ERA, which is the best by any active pitcher against the Yankees. Bello has even better numbers at Yankee Stadium, where in 5 games he has a 3–1 record and a 1.44 ERA.
