Takeaways
The Offense
The offense scored their two runs today on bases loaded walks in the first inning. The offense then managed just 3 baserunners the rest of the game, and no extra base hits on the day. Watching this offense was like watching paint dry.
“A great job after giving up two in the first of stringing together a lot of really good at-bats against Rasmussen in the first,” Aaron Boone said when addressing the media. “but then struggled from there…weren’t able to mount enough”
“I’ve got confidence in the guys in here. “Bellinger said when talking about the team’s performance in recent weeks. “I like showing up every day and going to battle with these boys in this locker room. We’ve got a lot of really good baseball players in here, got to keep focusing on what we can control.”
Starting Pitching Analysis
Cam Schlittler did not have great command of the zone, and thus allowed a lot of baserunners. Schlittler seems to have a knack of leaving baserunners in his starts so far. Schlittler needs to work on better locating his pitches.
Bullpen Usage
The Yankees bullpen was fine today. The one run, charged to Weaver, came on a sac fly but had Volpe made the play (not called an error), the runner would never have scored.

Additional Notes
My Takes:
Ben Rice must play every day — mostly at first base — against right-handed pitching. Paul Goldschmidt is an excellent defender, but has fallen off the face of the earth offensively. Andy Martino of SNY notes that the Yankees have brought up both Paul Goldschmidt and Cody Bellinger in trade talks in recent days. Obviously, trading Bellinger would signal a sell-off and for lack of better words, lost year for the Yankees. Because the Yankees have Ben Rice and Amed Rosario who can play first base, that makes Goldschmidt a lot more expendable, and in my opinion, it would be in their best interest to trade Goldschmidt this week and get something back in return for him, even if it’s not much.
The Yankees are not a good fundamental team, and that is not getting fixed. There were three plays — at least — that should have been made today, and were not. The Volpe bobble in a big spot in the eighth inning was defended by Boone, because Boone can never just let Volpe where it saying “He’s not going to get Caballero. Three-hopper to his right, there’s no play. But that’s one we want to secure.”. Chisholm and Schlittler also had plays earlier in the game that should be made that were not. Sooner or later, there might need to be a change in coaching philosophy that might get the point across to the players.
I noticed a few plays were some guys were not exactly hustling down the line to try and beat out a throw at first base. It has been clear for a while now that the Yankees have been showing a clear lack of effort in their play where it is so lackadaisical that it is unbelievably painful to watch.
The Yankees have had internal discussions about moving Cam Schlittler to the Bullpen. I believe this is something the Yankees should 100% do. The velocity and strike out ability will play in the ‘pen. The one thing that could be of concern is the walks, but I believe with work with Matt Blake and shorter, more regular outings will help him correct this. I truly believe that Schlittler could be a dominant late-innings reliever in this league — hopefully for the Yankees — for a long time.
The Yankees are 11-19 against the AL East in their first 30 games played against the division. The Yankees are .500 or worse against each of the other four division rivals. Forget the division, but if the Yankees have any hopes of making the postseason, the Yankees must be better within their division to make up some of the games.
The trade deadline is Thursday, and while the Yankees do not plan on doing anything significant, they must bring at least one reiver in here, preferably a lefty. Jack Curry of the YES Network mentioned that the Yankees are looking for a lefty strikeout reliever for the bullpen, something the Yankees need desperately.
The season is not over yet, but it’s getting late early for the Yankees and if they still have hopes of playing October baseball in 2025, they need to start playing better now to salvage this sinking ship, or else some organizational change is needed in the offseason.
