KANSAS CITY — The Yankees are adding a fresh arm to their bullpen on Thursday, optioning Brent Headrick to Triple-A Scranton and recalling right-handed pitcher Scott Effross. Effross was acquired from the Chicago Cubs at the 2022 trade deadline and has since thrown 16 innings at the major league level for New York. He was with the Yankees for three games last September, allowing two runs — both on a single swing.

Effross has shown promise during his time with the club; however, his primary challenge has been staying healthy. Given the Yankees’ ongoing need for reliable relief pitching, Effross presents a strong candidate to earn consistent opportunities in the bullpen.

This season on his rehab assignment, Effross has pitched 10 innings to the tune of a 9.00 ERA, rehabing from a hamstring injury he suffered during spring training.
