TORONTO, CA — Instant Reaction to the Yankees 10-1 loss to the Blue Jays in Game 1 of the ALDS.

  • The first pitch of the game was a ball off Trent Grisham’s foot that was ruled a fair ball and a groundout by Home Plate Umpire Chris Segal. Judge would then single, but a Bellinger flyout and a Rice strikeout ends the inning.

  • Luis Gil would take the mound and after getting two quick outs, hangs a changeup on the inside corner to Vladdy, who takes it deep to left to give Toronto the early 1-0 lead.

  • The Yankees had a chance in the second inning after a really good at-bat from McMahon after a single from Chisholm, but then a hard-hit ball off the bat of McMahon resulted in an inning-ending double play, and absolute backbreaker for the Yankees, trying to respond from the Vladdy home run.

  • You think momentum is nothing, the first pitch from Gil in the second inning was another solo home run from Kirk. Gil would then give up a single, but then retire the next three. Gil would throw 37 pitches through the first two innings.

  • The Yankees saw four pitches in a 1-2-3 third inning.

  • Luis Gil would retire the first two batters of the third before a two-out single by Vladdy that would end Gil’s afternoon, getting just eight outs. Tim Hill would come on and after allowing an infield single, would get out of the jam.

  • The Yankees would once again go down 1-2-3 in the fourth inning, not recording a runner in scoring position yet.

  • Tim Hill would become the first Yankees pitcher to retire the Jays in order, sending them down 1-2-3.

  • The Yankees, aided by some defensive gems from the Blue Jays, would go down 1-2-3 once again. The allowed Gausman to throw just 50 pitches through the first five innings, and recorded just two baserunners.

  • Comilo Doval came in and worked a 1-2-3 inning.

  • The Yankees would load the bases with nobody out for Judge, who would strike out. Bellinger would walk in a run, but Rice would pop out and Stanton would strikeout to leave the bases loaded.

  • Comilo Doval worked another 1-2-3 inning in the sixth.

  • The Yankees would get a baserunner, a one-out single by McMahon, but Volpe would strike out looking and Wells would ground out to end the inning.

  • Luke Weaver would come in and for the second appearance in a row, not record an out.

  • Fernando Cruz would come in and give up more runs, with a double down the line by Lukes and a sac fly by Vladdy.

  • Aaron Judge would have a double. Rice (0 for his last 7) and Bellinger, both 0 for four today, would strand him.

  • Paul Blackburn gives up a solo home run to Alejandro Kirk in the eighth, his second of the game. He would then give up a double, and back to back singles and a sac fly, increasing the Jays lead to 9-1. After getting a groundout, an RBI single makes it 10-1.

  • The Yankees did not score in the ninth inning and lost.

While the pitching is going to be a big talking point, especially Luke Weaver and the rest of the bullpen, the offense was sound asleep today and did not have an RBI hit in this game. The good news, the Yankees will have some better matchups pitching-wise for the rest of the series. Need the offense to show up to win ball games, and so far this postseason, the offense that was the best in baseball has been silenced.
