TORONTO — Anthony Volpe is once again at the center of another fundamental collapse by the Yankees, leading directly to a loss.
Another error, this time by Volpe, and the Blue Jays get another run, 4-1

”I mean, it’s a few too many. Aaron Boone said. “That said, you know, errors get handed out a lot of different places in a lot of different ways. So I’m not so worried about it.”
“ Um, I just, I rushed her throw, pulled it and, uh, gave Goldie a tough, tough pick to handle.” Volpe said, reflecting on his throw. ”Anytime you get a ball hit, you expect it to be an out, so when that doesn’t happen, um it’s frustrating.”
Volpe has graded out as a negative defender this season, ranking number one in errors among American League shortstops this season. Volpe’s one big draw was his gold glove defense, but that has taken a considerable step back in 2025, and with Volpe not hitting either, Volpe is a huge net negative for the Yankees.

None of this is good data, yet the Yankees continue to defend Volpe. Both Boone and Volpe were asked if Volpe was healthy, citing that he ices his shoulder since he banged up his shoulder on May third. Both Boone and Volpe confirmed that Volpe is healthy, though Volpe took a long pause before delivering his answer.
Volpe stayed down a long time after this grounder but he'll stay in the game

It might be seriously time for the Yankees to look at other options. Volpe is not helping you and any facet of the game and the division is beginning to slip away as the Yankees are sitting four games back. It’s a lot to ask, given the already long list of needs at the deadline, but Volpe is simply not cutting it for the Yankees right now. I think the Yankees pinch hitting for Volpe in the ninth inning on Monday shows just how much the Yankees trust him offensively in a big spot and the other options on the bench right now, Vivas and Peraza or even Nickie Lopez in AAA are not going to be as bad defensively as Volpe. Even if it’s for a short reset in AAA like the Mets did with Francisco Alvarez.
It is also no secret that as soon as 2027, top prospect George Lombard Jr. will be knocking on the door to potentially take Volpe’s job. While the Yankees want to take their time with Lombard Jr., given how much stock the organization has put into his development, but I doubt that Volpe will prevent Lombard Jr. from coming up when the time is right. The Yankees are playing nice in the sandbox with Volpe right now, but as soon as he wants to get paid — weather in arbitration this offseason, or in free agency — i’m sure the organizations tune will change.
