CINCINNATI — The New York Yankees are 3–7 in their last ten games and have exhibited weaknesses in several areas that could hinder them as the season progresses.
One key area of concern is the need for a right-handed bat. According to Bob Nightengale of USA Today, the Yankees are among the teams showing interest in infielder Isiah Kiner-Falefa. The team had reportedly explored acquiring Kiner-Falefa at last year’s trade deadline, ultimately opting to trade for Jazz Chisholm Jr. instead. Kiner-Falefa, a Gold Glove winner at third base, could fill a positional need and allow Chisholm Jr. to shift back to second base, where he is considered a stronger defender. Offensively, Kiner-Falefa is slashing .275/.319/.661 this season. Although he represents an upgrade over Oswald Peraza, it is debatable whether Kiner-Falefa’s bat alone would significantly impact the Yankees’ stretch run.
Another team of interest for the Yankees could be the Arizona Diamondbacks. Should the Diamondbacks fall out of postseason contention, they may become a source of appealing trade targets. One player the Yankees should consider is third baseman Eugenio Suárez. While Suárez has struggled defensively over the course of his career, he is enjoying a productive offensive season. Given the Yankees’ need for additional run production, Suárez could provide a valuable boost to their lineup.
In addition to offensive reinforcements, the Yankees should prioritize acquiring a high-leverage bullpen arm. Although Luke Weaver returned to action on Friday, he allowed two runs in two-thirds of an inning and has not pitched since. While there is optimism that Weaver can rebound from this performance, a contending team with championship aspirations can never have too much bullpen depth.
One reliever who could be a strong fit for the Yankees is Kyle Finnegan of the Washington Nationals. Finnegan brings closing experience and features a particularly effective split-finger fastball — a pitch highly regarded by Yankees pitching coach Matt Blake. As a pending free agent, Finnegan could serve as a critical addition to the Yankees’ bullpen during the second half of the season.
The Yankees should be fully committed to pursuing a World Series title in 2025. While the current roster is not far off from championship caliber, it is clear that external reinforcements — both offensively and in the bullpen — are necessary to elevate the team to the level of true contenders.
