Takeaways

The Offense

The offense got started early with good at-bats, but were only able to convert four runs off Framber Valdez, even though he was struggling. There was only one inning today where the Yankees did not have a hit.

Trent Grisham is today’s hero with a go-ahead solo home run in the eighth inning to eventually win the game after the Yankees blew their lead in the top half of the inning.

Grisham has had so many big home runs this season, in fact, four of his 21 home runs have either tied the game or given the Yankees the lead in the eighth inning or later.

Starting Pitching Analysis

Luis Gil gave up a leadoff home run to Pena, but really locked in after that, striking out seven batters over 5.1 innings of two-run ball. Even better, Gil only walked one batter and threw a lot more strikes today, allowing him to go deeper in the game.

Bullpen Usage

Mark Leiter Jr. was the first out of the Bullpen with a runner on first and one out, and on the fourth pitch, he induced an inning-ending double play. Luke Weaver was the next out of the bullpen, and he pitched a 1-2-3 inning on 11 pitches. His changeup was really crisp today. Boone then decided to bring in Comilo Doval — I don’t know why he did not just leave Weaver — and Doval walked the leadoff hitter, then got an out, then committed an E1 that should have been a double play. A base hit from Altuve turned into a run and the runners advanced on a E7. After walking Correa to load the bases, Boone goes to David Bednar for the 5-out save. Bednar was not able to secure the save, going 0-2 on Walker before walking him to tie the game. Bednar would strike out the next two batters to escape the jam. David Bednar came back out for the ninth inning and retired the side in order.
