Takeaways
The Offense
The Yankees offense was quiet today once again, managing just the three runs, one of them on an error by Ranger’s catcher Kyle Higashioka. Anthony Volpe continued his hot hitting with an RBI single off former teammate from high school and friend Jack Leiter.
Starting Pitching Analysis
Carlos Rodon did a good job limiting damage, but the four walks in his outing hurt his pitch count. Rodon needs to do a better job going down the stretch getting deep into these games because the bullpen is very taxed and can’t be getting 12 outs a game.
His changeup looked really good today, but he was not able to use it as a put away pitch today.
Bullpen Usage
Leiter was really sharp and efficient coming out for the second time since his IL stint. Tim Hill looked ok today, allowing a hit and a catcher’s interference. Yerry De Los Santos was able to get the two outs he needed, even though his command was off a bit today.
David Bednar left it all out on the field. You might look at the box score and see that he walked two batters — one in the eighth and one in the ninth — and gave up a hit to make it nail biting time, but he got squeezed like a lemon by the umpire in the ninth inning. Bednar struck out five batters, needing the five outs (really six, but whatever) and his changeup and splitter were super nasty. In a huge game, he came through and he looked like a true closer.
This is too close to call
