Takeaways
The Offense
The Yankees offense scored 12 runs. They were not the problem. Stanton, Grisham and Volpe all hit big Home Runs in this game and Dominguez had two hits and was on base three times. There were good at-bats up and down the lineup. Volpe also had a four hit game.
Starting Pitching Analysis
Carlos Rodon was not awesome today, getting into a lot of deep counts and really taxing the Bullpen. Rodon struck out nine, but he also walked five batters. Rodon’s velocity was down about two MPH.
Bullpen Usage
Loaisiga was the first out of the Pen and inherited a jam. He allowed two more runs to score and the Marlins to creep closer. Brent Headrick then worked a scoreless inning. And now, the ugly. Jake Bird made his Yankee debut in GRAND style, giving up a grand slam to Kyle Stowers. David Bednar — who struggles against the Marlins at LoanDepot park, 7 ERA in 8IP — then coming in and giving up a game-tying home run to Sanoja. Bednar did come out for the eighth inning and pitched a 1-2-3 inning. Comilo Doval then made his Yankees debut and imploded. After getting the first out, he allowed a single, a walk then a single that got passed Caballero in right that ended up being a double and an E9, putting the winning run on third. A little dribbler, lost by Wells at the plate resulted in a sole crushing walk-off loss.
The Yankees pitching staff as a whole walked eight batters today. That is completely unacceptable. Pitchers can’t walk eight people in a game and expect to win. Those are free bases. The walks lead directly to the collapse and eventual loss.
The Yankees' three new bullpen acquisitions in debut tonight:
Bird: 0.1 inning, 3 hits, 4 earned runs, 1 HR
Bednar: 1.2 innings, 4 hits, 2 earned runs, 1 HR.
Doval: 0.1 inning, 2 hits, 3 earned runs, 1 blown save.
Yankees blow leads of 6-0, 9-4 and 12-10.
