TORONTO — Is this rock bottom? It feels like rock bottom. The Yankees have been dominated and beaten down for four days now.
No Yankees starter got a decision this series, only one or those starters, Carlos Rodon really deserved a win. Every other starter gave up at least three earned runs in their outings.
One positive — the Yankees offense fought back multiple times to tie the games, but could not break through to take the lead. Though, even if they took the lead, I am not so sure that they could have kept a lead.
The Yankees bullpen is in absolute shambles heading into the Subway Series, with ineffective relievers and costly injuries.
To add more salt on the wound, Clarke Schmidt was removed from today’s start after three innings, and throwing just 55 pitches due to “right shoulder tightness”. It does not sound good. For a pitcher who has been as consistent as Schmidt, this would be a huge blow to the Yankees starting staff, particularly because they don’t have the depth to cover that loss. Allan Winans did not pitch well in his short stint with the Yankees, but Cam Schlitler would be an intriguing option, but again, he is a AAA starter and might not be the right option to throw in the middle of a pennant race.
Anthony Volpe is becoming more and more of an issue, and today, he left a literal village on base, costing the Yankees so many runs.
Oswald Peraza also is not a major leaguer and was also a catalyst for the loss today, leaving runners on base himself.
Luke Weaver gave up another home run today, again to George Springer. Weaver has given up six runs, four earned in the two appearances he made this series. His ERA is north of nine since returning from the IL, surrendering three home runs in that time span. Might be time to re-evaluate Weaver’s health.
George Springer owns the Yankees like it’s the 2017 ALCS again.
Subway Series tomorrow.
