NEW YORK — This is more than a June Swoon. This is more than a tough stretch. This is an utter disaster and it’s now time for the Yankees to stop telling themselves that it’s all going to be ok and they are the best team and address these issues.
The Yankees began this game with back-to-back home runs by Dominguez and Judge giving the Yankees a two-run lead.
Marcus Stroman did not pitch that bad today, but Soto got him for a two-run shot in the first inning after Dominguez made a misplay in right field.
The Yankees continued to fight back to tie and ultimately take the lead in this game, with homers by Bellinger and another by Dominguez. Dominguez has been spectacular this week, having hits in each game he has played. Keep him at leadoff.
The Yankee bullpen came in and blew the game with Ian Hamilton giving up a solo homer to Bret Baty.
Luke Weaver deservs his own paragraph because he has been abismal since returning from the IL. Weaver entered today’s game with two outs and nobody on. Wever then issued a walk to Alonso and a go-ahead two-run home run to Jeff McNeil. That is the third game in a row Weaver has surrendered a home run and he has given up eight earned runs since returning from the IL two weeks ago. Might be time to go back to the IL. A bit of this is on the manager for continuing to put him into high-leverage spots and blow games (thats two this week) by giving up big home runs. Boone noted he needed to be better with his bullpen. He has not been better.
The Yankees offense did enough to win this game today, and frankly, the past three games, but the starters not going deep and the bullpen being in shambles, are costing them games.
Trent Grisham pinch-hit for Volpe in the ninth inning, showing just how bad it has gotten with Volpe offensivly latley.
The Yankees will look to snap a five game losing streak tomorrow with Rodon on the mound at Citi Field.
