THE BRONX, NY — There was some magic last night at the corner of 161st Street and River Avenue as the New York Yankees clinched their 60th postseason berth in franchise history.

Heading into the bottom of the ninth inning, the Yankees trailed the Chicago White Sox by a run, when Anthony Volpe and Austin Wells led the inning off with back-to-back singles. After a double play, Volpe was at third and Judge, who was intentionally walked with two outs, was on first base for Cody Bellinger, who worked a terrific at-bat, drawing a walk on a pitch to the backstop that scored Volpe from third base to tie the game. José Caballero then worked a nine-pitch at-bat, lining a walk-off RBI single to send the Yankees back to October.

“The guys, all the way down to the last strike, knew we were going to win that game,” Aaron Judge told SNY after the game.

All the at-bats in the ninth inning, except for the double play, were grind-you-out type of at-bats needed for any team going on a postseason run. The Yankees have been criticized this season for their lack of small ball and being too home run–reliant, yet the whole inning was singles and walks—a pretty great way to build a rally in the playoffs.

“A great moment for him,” Aaron Boone said after the game. “It’s great for us to check that box and know we’re going back to October baseball.”

José Caballero got to celebrate his first career walk-off with his teammates by popping champagne in the Yankees clubhouse after the game, after punching their postseason ticket.

“First box to check, right? We got to get in. We’re in,” Aaron Boone said to the team postgame on YES Network. “Don’t take that shit for granted. Yeah, we’re in the playoffs. We got a lot more to do, right? We’ve got a lot bigger goals. Enjoy this.”

“We’re excited about getting in, but we’ve got bigger things ahead of us,” Yankees captain Aaron Judge said during the postseason celebration.

“I feel like I’m very proud, but I feel like I’d be prouder with a ring on my finger and saying that we won the World Series,” Jazz Chisholm Jr. told the YES Network.

“We’re all brothers in here. We rely on each other, and we try to keep it rolling,” Cody Bellinger told SNY after the game.

The one thing consistent from everyone on the team is that they are still motivated and want to win the AL East. The Toronto Blue Jays lost 4-1 to the Boston Red Sox as Judge slid across home plate, which now brings the AL East deficit down to just one game—but really a game and a half due to the head-to-head record.

The positive for the Yankees is that they are keeping the pressure on the Blue Jays to have to win every game since the Yankees keep winning, and Toronto has struggled as of late, losing five of their last six games.

“The ultimate goal is to win our division. It’s right there for us,” Aaron Judge said. With five games left, the task is certainly a tall one, but not impossible.
