BOSTON — Following a tough loss the night before, the Yankees were looking to even the series but ultimately struggled again at Fenway Park. New York has now dropped four straight games against Boston and holds a 1–4 record in the five matchups between the rivals this season. The Yankees had a prime opportunity to bury the Red Sox in both the division and playoff standings but have played the past two weekends with a noticeable lack of urgency.

A similar scenario unfolded last season, when the Yankees arrived at Fenway on a hot streak but left deflated, which seemed to derail much of their momentum for the remainder of the year. The hope is that history does not repeat itself.

Injury/Roster News:

Notes/Analysis:

FINAL: 4–3 BOS

  • WP: Dobbins (4–1) 3.74

  • LP: Rodon (8–5) 3.01

  • SV: Weisert (2)

Record: 42–27

Record against the AL East: 8–10

  • Carlos Rodon’s Final Line:

  • 5.0 IP+ | 4H | 4R | 3ER | 4K | 2BB | 92P | 3.01ERA

Carlos Rodon did not look horrific today, giving up three earned runs, and one of them should not have happened, when Campbell clearly leaned into a the pitch, but he was not called back. He later scored on a two-out double. Rodon’s day ended after a leadoff double by Story in the sixth inning, who scored on a sac fly by Marcelo Mayer. Rodon should have done enough to warrent a stronger performance

  • The Yankees offense has hit a skid lately, with some pathetic at-bats in another low scoring affair.

  • Paul Goldschmidt has struggled, a lot lately, and batting him cleanup is killing the lineup. Ben Rice, though he is hitting the ball hard, has also fallen off the face of the earth offensively.

  • The Yankees offense managed just two hits off Dobbins, a single from Jazz and a Single from Volpe. The Yankees have just one extra base hit in the two games, the Judge homer last night.

  • The first run came in the seventh inning, off a Jasson Dominguez RBI single, bringing in Goldschmidt who walked to lead off the inning. On the next pitch from a different pitcher, Justin Wilson, Austin Wells singles home another run, making it 4–2 Boston.

  • After a DJ LeMahieu strikeout, Jasson Dominguez gets caught stealing and thrown out on the basepaths at third, with Grisham at the plate and Judge on deck in a big spot. The Fox Broadcast thinks Dominguez believed that it was strike three, and that is unacceptable. Dominguez’ baserunning definitely costed the Yankees an opportunity for some runs.

  • The Yankees got to within one run in the ninth inning, but were unable to capitalize in the ninth inning.
