ST. LOUIS — After completing multiple trades at the 2025 trade deadline, the question aroze if the Yankees would resign RHP Luke Weaver past the 2025 season.

The Yankees claimed Luke Weaver off waivers from the Mariners in September of 2023. When acquired, Weaver was a starting pitcher. Weaver was given a contract in January of 2024 for the 2024 season and an option for the 2025 season, and none of us would ever guess the rewards that would come from that signing.

Coming out of camp in 2024, Weaver was placed in the bullpen for the first time in his career and the former first rounder slowly climbed the circle of trust. Last September, Weaver became the new defacto closer after Clay Holmes lost his job after faltering down the stretch. The change in role seemed to unlock something in Weaver as he rose to the occasion and got some of the biggest outs in modern Yankees history, including closing out the ALCS in Cleveland.

Weaver has been dominant for most of 2025 — except for a three-week stretch following an IL stint — and has proven to be one of the best high-end relievers in baseball. In the 2025 season, Weaver owns a 0.81 WHIP (walks and hits per inning pitched) this season, which is the second best of any reliever in Baseball.

A reunion with Weaver past 2025 would be in the Yankees best interest. Having Weaver in the Yankees bullpen just makes the whole bullpen complexion better because of the versatility in roles — weather closing games or setting up — is really valuable to any team. There is also a little added note that Weaver has done this job at a very high level, both in New York and in the postseason, which as the Yankees know, is a really hard thing to find in a pitcher of Weavers caliber.

To be clear, nothing is done or is close to being done between the two sides, but the Yankees would like Weaver to return to the Yankees for obvious reasons. The Yankees are better with Weaver on the team than on another team.
