TORONTO, CA — Well that was something. The Yankees sent their ace and stopper to the mound, looking to even the series in Toronto, and it did not go as planned.
Max Fried left numerous pitches over the plate today, and the Blue Jays made him pay, scoring seven runs against him, though only five when Fried was on the mound as he was pulled with two on and no outs in the fourth inning. Fried has struggles a lot in the postseason, and has struggled even more against Toronto this season, and all the balls in play lead to tough luck for the Yankees and Fried.
Will Warren came in and pitched, well, like Will Warren. Warren surrendered the difference in runs in this game, four home runs, including a Grand Slam to Vladimir Guerrero Jr. Imagine your star coming up clutch like that with the bases loaded? Must be cool. Warren also gave up home runs to Springer and two home runs to Varsho. Warren gave up six runs in five innings of work. The difference in the game — six runs. Warren has been ineffective against AL East teams this season, but I guess the Yankees needed innings today.
Trey Yesavage pitched for the Blue Jays. He no-hit the Yankees for the duration of his outing, 5.1 innings of work, striking out 11 Yankees. In fact, against Yesavage today, the 58.1% miss rate against Trey Yesavage today was the highest miss rate they've had against a starting pitcher this season.
The Yankees were able to score seven runs off the Toronto bullpen. Maybe that is enough to get the offense going for a bit, because before that, the offense had been quiet all postseason. Judge also got a hit today with the bases loaded, which is better than yesterday.
At least Luke Weaver was able to get an out today, so that’s progress.
Judge is 2-3 with a walk today, and this blooper RBI single.

In order to keep their season alive, the Yankees will need to win the next three games in a row, with their backs fully against the wall. They will head back to Yankee Stadium after today’s game and play Tuesday after tomorrow’s off-day. The Yankees will rely on Carlos Rodon against Shane Bieber to avoid the three-game sweep and avoid elimination. The Yankees did go down 0-2 against Cleveland in 2017 and came back to win the next three, so it’s been done, it’s just not easy. The Yankees have also not won a postseason series as the team without home field advantage in the Aaron Boone era.
