NEW YORK — Instant Reaction to the Yankees taking the series against the Nationals by a score of 5-1, improving to 72-60 on the season.

  • The Nationals took an early 1-0 lead on a single and this lazy play by Bellinger and Rosario. It’s plays like this that cost you runs, and games in big moments, like it did. Gil was able to work out of further trouble to get out of the jam without allowing any more runs.

  • The Yankees strung together an impressive two-out rally, with a Goldschmidt double, walks by Judge and Bellinger to load the bases for Stanton. Giancarlo Stanton would work a full count before hitting a bases-clearing double, giving the Yankees the lead. Stanton has been so clutch this season for the Yankees, especially in August where he is batting .404 in 19 games.

  • Luis Gil’s Final Line: 5.0 IP | 5 H | 1 R/ER | 4 BB | 5 K | 92-59 P/S | 3.75 ERA

    • Gil was not on his A game today, but he was able to persevere and work through it. He walked four batters today — which is an improvement from his last outing. The fastball speed was down a bit today during a laborious fourth inning, but he dialed it up in the fifth to record three strikeouts.

  • Fernando Cruz was the first out of the Yankees bullpen and his stuff looked good, striking out two in 2/3rds of an inning. But, a bloop single, a hit by pitch and a bunt single around those strikeouts resulted in the bases loaded, and agree getting the strikeout, the Yankees called on Tim Hill for the lefty lane — and it worked. Hill got James Wood to ground out to third, then pitched a solid seventh inning, with some slick defense behind him.

  • After a bloop infield single by Bellinger, Stanton hit a big blast, sending a ball 451 feet from home plate, halfway up the left center field bleachers to add two more runs, making it 5-0 NYY. Can’t say enough about how good Stanton has been in the month of August.

  • The Yankees had a few chances to add on in the sixth and seventh innings, but were unable to add more runs on against the Nationals bullpen.

  • Comilo Doval was the next out of the bullpen, working with a four-run lead and retired the side in order with two strikeouts and sanwiching a flyout. The velo was there today from Doval and his stuff looked really good. That was easaly the best he has looked as a Yankee.

  • Anthony Volpe was 0-4 in his return from the bench.

  • David Bednar came out for the ninth inning and he slammed the door to secure a series win against the Nats.
