TAMPA BAY — Instant Reaction to the Yankees blowing out the Rays in the series opener at George M. Steinbrenner Field, improving to 68-57 on the season.
The Yankees got off to a super hot start with Judge, Bellinger and Stanton hitting back-to-back-to-back home runs off Rays starter Shane Baz. It was the third time this season that the Yankees hit three home runs in the first inning, the first time in franchise history.

Jose Caballero would add another home run, a two-run shot in the second inning off Baz, making it 5-0 Yankees. It was the first time in Baz’ career that he had surrendered more than three home runs in one start.

Rodon started to struggle with his command in the first and in the second inning, allowed two runs — an RBI single and an RBI groundout — but with all things being even, was able to work out of trouble.
Jazz Chisholm joined the home run party in the third inning with a solo blast off Baz. Jazz has had some good at-bats as of late.

Then, the game got a bit out of hand in the fourth inning after Stanton hit his second home run of the game — his first multi-home run game since July 8th, 2023 against the Cubs — this time a three-run shot.
Giancarlo Stanton this season:
.308 AVG, 14 HR, 38 RBI, 1.011 OPS

Ben Rice — who is catching today — followed up by going back-to-back with Stanton, hitting the ball out of GMS. Rice has shown so much power and really needs to be playing every day.

After Rodon locked in to work a second-consecutive clean inning, the Yankees offense continued the punishing of Rays pitching with Bellinger hitting the Yankees eighth home run of the game, following a Judge single.

Rodon’s Final Line: 6.0 IP | 5 H | 2 R/ER | 2 BB | 5 K | 102-64 P/S | 3.24 ERA
Though the offense will be the main story of the day, that should not take away from the performance Rodon gave today. Though he did not have his best command, Rodon was able to lock in and give the Yankees six strong innings. The Yankees lefties have owned the Rays this season, allowing just five runs over their combined five starts.
Carlos Rodón might have some of the best secondary pitches in all of baseball

Mottled in all the good, there was this play in the bottom of the seventh inning. It did not cost the Yankees, and occurred in a blowout, but this is something that could haunt them in a really big spot. Volpe as the shortstop has to take charge and catch this ball, it’s his play.
Despite the E5, Leiter Jr. works a scoreless 7th.
This is Volpe's ball all the way.

Yerry De Los Santos struggled a bit in the eighth inning, allowing a run, all with two outs.
Jose Caballero would hit his second home run of the night, and the ninth Yankee home run of the night, making the 2025 Yankees the first team in MLB History to have multiple games hitting nine or more home runs. Their first was on March 30th against the Brewers. Nine home runs is also ties a franchise record.
The Yankees NINTH homer of the night ties the single-game franchise record. 😳

With the Yankees winning and the Red Sox and Mariners both losing their games today, the Yankees now own sole possession of the top wildcard spot in the AL, as well as sole possession of second place in the AL East.
