THE BRONX, NY — Instant Reaction to the Yankees demoralizing 11-1 loss to the Tigers, falling to 80-65 on the season.
The Yankees offense was silenced through the first four innings, with their only real threat was in the third inning with first and second, one out for Judge. Judge worked the at-bat to 3-1, then grounded into an inning-ending double play.
The Tigers would score first after Carlos Rodon lost his command with one out in the fifth inning, allowing a single, a walk and a hit-by-pitch, setting up Gleyber Torres for a two-run single. Rodon was coasting until that point, but his outing will not be defined on what he did in the first four innings, rather what he did in the fifth inning, giving the bottom of the Tigers lineup free passes.
Judge would come up in a big spot again, as the tying run in the sixth inning, but he grounded into another inning-ending double play. Judge has really been struggling as of late, and not having Judge be the threat he is could collapse this team.
The Yankees offense has been really weak for about a week now, since last Friday, and while they have won two games with that weak offense, it seems they can’t put two hits together in an inning to start a rally. The Yankees had three hits through the seventh inning, they also had three double plays in that time frame as well.
Mark Letier Jr. pitched again today. He was charged with another run, but this one was to no fault of his own. An easy double play ball was not converted by Amed Rosario, turning into a single, and a weird wild pitch, originally called a balk, put the runners into scoring position. Camilo Doval came in to face the middle of the Tigers lineup, and allowed an RBI groundout, but also had a beautiful pitch to strike out — to end the inning.
A balk was issued to Leiter Jr. because his pitch got stuck under Wells chest protector

Aaron Boone left Doval in for the eight inning and it did not go well. Doval was only able to get one out, and allowed three hits, including a two-run home run and three runs overall.
Tim Hill then came in and allowed a two-run home run to Kerry Carpenter with two outs, turning this game into a laugher. I don’t think any of the 30,000 Yankees fans were laughing.
So far in this series against the Tigers, the Yankees bullpen has surrendered a combined nineteen runs in two games. The bullpen is typically the achilles heal of a team, but for the Yankees, it’s a glaring weakness.
Austin Wells ensured that the Yankees were not shut out today, powering a solo home run to right field. Wells has had some really good swings as of late.
The #Yankees will not be shut out. Wells hits a 401 ft. solo shot to right. His at-bats have been good as of late.
8-1

Jose Caballero had some really good at-bats tonight, while also making a lot of slick defensive plays (except for the play in the ninth inning). Caballero is making a case to be the shortstop going forward.
Luke Weaver game in for the ninth inning and struggled once again. He allowed back-to-back singles, putting runners on first and third, no outs before allowing a sac fly by Green, then a two-run home run by Keith.
This game got so out of hand that Austin Slater came on to pitch the ninth inning after Weaver gave up the home run. This is just the second time the Yankees have pitched a position player this season. Slater was actually the best Yankee pitcher tonight, not allowing a run.
The Yankees were able to string together back-to-back singles in the ninth inning off Hanifee, Rice struck out, then Dominguez, pinch-hitting for Stanton hits an infield single, loading the bases with one out. Jazz would line out and Wells would groundout and the Yankees could not add on and avoid losing back-to-back games by ten runs or more for the first time since 1988.
