ST. LOUIS — Instant reactions to the Yankees 4-3 win over the Cardinals, improving to 65-57 on the season.
The Yankees got on the board early off Pallante with a walk by Grisham, a hustle double by Rice, an RBI groundout by Judge and the big blow, a two-run home run off the bat of Chisholm, making it 3-0 Yankees.

The Yankees had another opportunity to score in the second, loading the bases for Aaron Judge. Judge grounded out on the first pitch he saw to end the inning.
The Yankees would add on with some small ball, with Chisholm working a walk, stealing second, then advanced to third on a wild pitch. Chisholm would score on an RBI single off the bat of Jasson Dominguez.

Over the first three defensive innings, the Yankees had their fair share of web gems, with three slickly turned double plays and nice play on a line out made by Caballero. Also, Bellinger should get more playing time at first base as he made some awesome plays over there.
Luis Gil began to get into some trouble in the fourth and fifth innings. In the fourth inning, the Cardinals had runners on second and third with no outs, but Gil was able to strand them. The fifth inning was different, after getting Victor Scott II to fly out to start the innings, back-to-back doubles by Nootbarr and Winn knocked Gil out of the game after 5.1 innings.
Leiter Jr. was the first out of the pen, and he walked Burleson to lead his outing off, but got Herrera to ground into an inning-ending double play.

Gil looked good today, and most importantly — did not give up a home run. Gil’s command came to fruition in the middle innings, but disappeared in the fifth inning. The fifth inning also summed up who Luis Gil is as a pitcher — a bulldog who can wiggle out of big jams.
Camilo Doval was the next out of the pen and though he struck out two batters, he struggled allowing a walk, a hits batsman and an RBI double.
Weaver came in with runners on second and third and two outs and spiked a changeup in the dirt, allowing another run to score, before striking out Lars Nootbarr to leave the tying run on third to end the inning. Weaver then worked a scoreless eighth inning around a two-out double and an E1 on a pickoff attempt.
The Yankees had yet another chance to tack on some insurance but failed to do so in the eighth inning, getting runners on first and second with no outs, then the bases loaded and two outs, but Bellinger popped up with the bases loaded to end the inning.
Bednar came in for the ninth inning and shut the door, with some help from Cody Bellinger in left — and the home plate umpire.
