NEW YORK — Instant Reaction to the Yankees dropping their second game in a row to the Red Sox and dropping to 69-59 on the season.

  • Max Fried got the start in the pitchers duel today and pitched his best game since the all-star break. He pitched six innings and did not yield a run to the potent Boston offense. Though he walked three batters, his command was mostly a lot better today and his curveball particularly was very sharp. After the way he has struggled since the All Star Break, it was encouraging to see this performance out of Fried.

  • Mark Leiter Jr. was the first out of the bullpen and he gave up back-to-back doubles to pinch-hitter Nathaniel Lowe and Connor Wong to give the Red Sox a 1-0 lead.

  • Devin Williams was the next out of the ‘Pen and he sent the Red Sox down 1-2-3. Williams’ fastball was much sharper today, setting up the signature airbender, leading to two strikeouts.

  • That was all good with Fried. The issue — The Yankees offense was sound asleep against Bello. The Yankees recorded just three hits and three walks in seven scoreless innings. The Yankees also banged into two double plays, one because of a horrible baserunning play by Wells in the sixth inning. That blunder costed the Yankees of potentially having Judge up with a runner on and two out to possibly do some damage. The strike zone by home plate umpire Lance Barret also did not help, but that is not an excuse.

  • In the eighth inning against Whitlock, The Yankees made the decision to let Volpe hit against him when Stanton was available to pinch-hit. Volpe and Stanton both struck out swinging to end the inning. Volpe heard loud boos as he walked into the dugout. Volpe is in another one of his signature offensive slides.

  • To make things worse, Anthony Volpe was left in for defense for the ninth inning and he made this huge misplay and did not record an out. You absolutely have to get an out in this situation. Just another instance of bad fundamentals for the Yankees.

  • But, Volpe did redeem himself by making a really nice play to get the speedy Duran out at the plate.

  • The Yankees did not record an extra-base hit tonight or have a runner past first base.

  • Against former closer Aroldis Chapman, the Yankees were retired in order and were shut out against the Red Sox for the second time this season.
