THE BRONX, NY — Instant Reaction to the Yankees 3-1 victory over the rival Blue Jays, improving to 79-63 on the season.
The Yankees got the party started in the second inning, with Bellinger working a leadoff walk, followed by an error by the Blue Jays infilders, setting the Yankees up with first and third, no outs. Jasson Dominguez would line an RBI single into right center, making it 1-0 Yankees early. After a Volpe strikeout, Austin Wells would hit a sinking line drive to Barger in right that was caught for a sac fly, Wells’ MLB-Leading tenth of the season and a 2-0 Yankee lead.
Luis Gil’s Final Line: 6.0 IP | 3 H | 1 R/ER | 4 BB 1 K | 0 HR | 90-56 P/S | 3.31 ERA
Luis Gil turned in a quality start, though the walks are a bit much. Gil has made the big pitch in spots where he needed to. The one run Gil did give up was due to two walks and a double clutch by Jazz on a potential double play ball. Gil’s stuff looked really sharp, but his control was all over the place, leading to a lot of balls in play.
Cody Bellinger continues to make his defensive presence known as he comes up big in right field in the sixth inning with two outs, nailing Bo Bichette at the plate attempting to score on a shallow single by Nathaniel Lukes.
After the long rain delay, The Yankees had runners on second and third with one out, and though Wells gave it a ride, it stayed in the park for a sac fly, making it 3-1 Yankees.
Luke Weaver was the first out of the bullpen for the seventh inning and after given up a leadoff double, got the next two batters out before the Yankees brought Fernando Cruz in to face the top of the Blue Jays lineup.
Fernando Cruz came on and walked George Springer and his 27 home runs and then got Barger to ground out to end the inning. Cruz stayed in for the eighth inning and after an infield single, got the next two batters out.
David Bednar came in for a four-out save in the eighth inning and retired all four hitters he faced to earn the save.
This sets up a huge rubber game tomorrow with Max Fried taking the ball for the Yankees, and Max Scherzer taking the ball for the Blue Jays.
