After Cam Schlittler walked Larnach to start the third inning, Buxton hit a double after a 10-pitch at-bat. Schlittler then induced a ground ball to second base, allowing a run to score. Schlittler then struck out Clemens and after a walk to Jeffers and a mound visit, got Walner to pop-out to third and end the jam. A really good job by Schlittler to bear down and keep the game tied in that spot.
Cam Schlittler’s Final Line: 5.0 IP | 2 H | 1 R/ER | 2 BB | 0 HR | 6 K | 86-55 | 3.94 ERA
Yerry De Los Santos was the first out of the bullpen in the sixth inning and with a mix of unluckiness and hard contact, two infield singles and a double in the gap, aided by an E8 by Grisham allowed two runs to score. Mark Leiter Jr. then came on and got two outs quick, then allowed a double.
It is a real question why Boone pulled Schlittler — who was cruising through most of the outing. After De Los Santos had multiple ups today and was used last night, I don’t know why he was the first out of the Bullpen over Leiter, who was clearly ready. Another bullpen management question for Boone, who has had his fair share of bullpen management questions this season — most being warranted.
The Twins ace Joe Ryan really locked in after the Bellinger home run, allowing just two more baserunner — a walk to Bellinger and a double to Volpe.
Devin Williams pitched a 1-2-3 seventh inning in low leverage.
Aaron Boone made a really bad move in the seventh inning after Volpe doubled and advanced to third on a groundout. The Twins elected to go to their lone lefty in the bullpen — Ryan Funderburk — to face Austin Wells and Boone did not pinch hit, going to Goldshmidt against the lefty.
The Twins bullpen was able to hang on and the Yankees were unable to complete the sweep.
