Takeaways

The Offense

Judge got the offense started with a solo homer in the first, but that is where the notable offense ended. There were a few opportunities in the first three innings where the Yankees could have tacked on runs or perhaps blow the game open, but they did not. The Yankees could not even convert a sac fly or an RBI groundout. Just strikeouts. The Yankees were 0–8 with RISP and left six runners on base.

Starting Pitching Analysis

Allan Winans was great to start the game, facing the minimum through the first three innings, but it all came crashing down in the fourth inning. He allowed three runs in the fourth inning and one run in the fifth.

Bullpen Usage

Ian Hamilton was the first out, and he walked Matt Mclain to load the bases for De La Cruz who hit an RBI single. He then got Steer to roll into a double play. Hamilton then came out for the sixth inning, and allowed a 1-out double, but left the runner stranded. Hill came in and pitched a 1–2–3 seventh inning before Boone kept him in to start the eighth inning, where he surrendered a homer to De La Cruz. Leiter Jr. would come on and allow a run (should be unearned) due to a Volpe throwing error on what should have been a groundout to end the inning.

Additional Notes

Injury updates:

  • Luis Gil (High-Grade Lat Strain) faced live hitters today for the first time since being shut down in spring training. Gil threw about 20 pitches and said he’s encouraged by how his rehab is going and how he feels. Today, he wasn’t focused on velocity but might have been 95–96.

  • Yerry De Los Santos was having trouble extending his elbow during his last outing (Wednesday), and is undergoing further testing. No further updates provided.

  • The Yankees Placed LHP Ryan Yarbrough on the 15-day injured list (retroactive to 6/20) with a low-grade right oblique strain. No timeline yet, but it’ll be symptom based. Once he’s symptom free, he’ll start throwing again. It began bothering him two starts ago. He was unable to throw his most recent scheduled bullpen.

Roster moves:

  • The Yankees Optioned LHP Jayvien Sandridge (#88) from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.

  • The Yankees recalled RHP Allan Winans (#62) from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.
