Takeaways

The Offense

The Yankees offense was quiet for the first five innings, allowing just one baserunner, a Rice double in the first inning. Brown went on to retire 14 straight Yankees till the McMahon walk in the sixth inning, followed by a Wells double. After a Grisham shallow flyout, Rice would come up in a big spot, and hit an RBI single to get the Yankees on the board. Aaron Judge would follow with an RBI single chasing Brown out of the game. Bellinger would strike out and Chisholm would fly out to leave the runners on base.

The Yankees offense would do nothing the rest of the game. The Yankees had three innings with runners on base — the first and the sixth inning then a Volpe RBI single in the 10th inning.

The Yankees are now 3-8 in extra innings this season.

Starting Pitching Analysis

Cam Schlittler did not pitch too bad tonight. The only damage was the two-run home run to Jose Altuve in the first inning. While there were baserunners on base in every inning but the second inning, Schlittler did a good job working out of trouble.

Bullpen Usage

Yerry De Los Santos was the first out of the ‘Pen and worked a scoreless inning and two thirds. Comilo Doval came in to finish the seventh inning off and after walking Correa, he struck out Walker on three pitches to end the inning. Doval came out for the eighth and looked even better, retiring the side very quickly in order. Luke Weaver would come on and work a scoreless ninth inning.

Devin Williams would come on for the 10th inning and completely implode once again. The outing started with a wild pitch on the first pitch he threw. Then, he gave up an RBI single, then after getting two outs (one he was lucky to get), he surrenders a big two-run home run to Taylor Tramel. The Yankees usage of Devin Williams in high-leverage has cost the team AT LEAST eight games so far this season, yet Boone continues to go to Williams and I really don’t understand it.

Up Next

  • Series Outlook: The Yankees look to bounce back after a really tough loss in extras.

Additional Notes

My Takes

Aaron Boone confirmed to the media that the Yankees were short in the ‘pen, trying to stay away from Leiter Jr. and Bednar. Boone liked the righty lane of Williams opposed to Hill and Headrick tonight. Below are the platoon splits from both Hill and Headrick, and there is nothing too alarming that says they can’t pitch against right-handed batters. In fact, Headrick — who can strike guys out — has been better against right-handers than lefties this season, so there really is no excuse.

Tim Hill Splits:

Brent Headrick Splits:

“Didn’t work out tonight … they took advantage of a couple mistakes.” Boone said about Williams’ performance tonight.

“Today I hung my changeup. I thought I made some solid pitches.” Williams said about his outing “Thought Correa made a good piece of hitting on his hit. I was OK with that pitch. The one to Trammell was terrible.” “I’m not making pitches.” Williams added. It’s pretty simple. I stink right now.”

Devin Williams was then asked if he feels confident right now and responded by saying “I’m not going to say it’s as high as it’s ever been, obviously not the way that things have been going. I just need to put some good ones together, get the ball rolling in the right direction.”

Williams does have a point about the Correa at-bat. The pitch Correa hit was a well-executed pitch, but the lawn dart that proceeded it made it more hittable and Correa did what he had to do. In my opinion, after the rocket off the wall that was lucky to be a 8-6 double play was hit, Williams should have been pulled in favor of a lefty — with a lefty at-bat — to try and get Tramel out and hopfully keep it a one-run game, but that did not happen and the rest is history.
