NEW YORK — The Yankees looked lifeless entering the eighth inning, with Mariners RHP Bryan Woo throwing a no-hitter and looking dominant when Jazz Chisholm Jr. stepped up to the plate.

Chisholm Jr. ripped a single into right field. Ben Rice followed up with a hot shot single putting runners on first and third with no outs. Austin Wells hit a sac fly, and after an Anthony Volpe strikeout, Aaron Boone pinch-hit for Jorbit Vivas, sending up Giancarlo Stanton. Stanton proceeded to send a ball 415 feet to center field.

When the Yankees decided on Wednesday to designate DJ LeMahieu for assignment, one of the reasons cited by general manager Brian Cashman was roster flexibility. Ironically, Cashman cited the exact situation that occurred tonight.

“I’ll give an example” Cashman said. “If Boonie wanted to pinch hit for Peraza, currently, the alternative to play third is Escarra. That’s not something I could leave comfortably.”

Well, Cashman’s decision paid off because bringing up Vivas — who replaced LeMahieu on the roster — made it possible for Boone to use his bench options in a big spot — this time Giancarlo Stanton — leading to a Yankees comeback win.

The Yankees would go on to win this game in dramatic walk-off fashion in one of the craziest ninth and tenth innings you will ever see, including some fun gamesmanship.
