NEW YORK — In a stunning move that signals a major shift in the Yankees’ infield plans, the team has DFA’d veteran infielder DJ LeMahieu, per a team announcement. LeMahieu, 35, was in the midst of a difficult 2025 season, posting a 674 OPS and declining range in the field. After missing the early portion of the year with a foot injury, LeMahieu struggled to regain form and had recently lost his everyday job at third base.

Aaron Boone said that DJ did not ask for his release after losing his starting positon, but this was an organization decision.

“It’s been a tough couple days” Aaron Boone said about the decision to DFA LeMahieu. “wish all the best for what’s been a great player”

Brian Cashman met the media as well and said that the decision to DFA LeMahieu came based on roster flexibility, citing that LeMahieu’s physical limitations could impact the way Aaron Boone manages late in games, and it was not a risk the Yankees wanted to take.

”And I just ultimately made a decision that, uh, best for the roster configuration moving forward. Cashman said. “ if Boonie wants to pinch it for Peraza later in the game, you know, currently the alternative to play third would be Escarra. And that’s just not something I could leave comfortably.”

Nicknamed “LeMachine” during his early Yankee years, LeMahieu was a two-time All-Star in pinstripes and the 2020 AL batting champion. But after a string of injuries dating back to late 2022, the production never quite returned to its elite levels.

The Yankees’ decision to designate him for assignment clears a roster spot ahead of the trade deadline and paves the way for a potential infield addition.

LeMahieu, who is still owed $22 million through 2026, could clear waivers and be released unless a trade partner emerges. A quiet and respected leader in the clubhouse, DJ’s departure marks the end of a significant chapter in the Yankees’ recent history.
