Sources confirm to Sports Insider that the Yankees are acquiring third baseman Ryan McMahon from the Colorado Rockies.

A 2024 All-Star, McMahon has built his reputation on elite defense at third base, posting strong metrics in both Outs Above Average (OAA) and Defensive Runs Saved (DRS). His steady glove offers the Yankees a substantial upgrade over the rotating cast of infielders they have deployed this season.

In 2025, McMahon has slashed around .217–.240/.314–.323/.403–.420, with 16 home runs and approximately 35 RBIs through mid‑July. He consistently posts a wRC+ between 89–97, translating to league-average overall production while maintaining about 20–23 home runs per season over the last five years. While not the power hitter like Eugenio Suárez, McMahon offers a blend of durability and consistency at the position.

McMahon is under contract through 2027, earning approximately $12 million in 2025, followed by $16 million per season in 2026 and 2027.

The Rockies will receive LHP Griffin Herring and RHP Josh Grosz from the Yankees.

“The handful of times that we’ve played against them that I watch him, you’re like, ‘That’s what it should look like over there.'” Boone said when asked about the trade. “There’s no reason to think we can’t be a really good defensive club moving forward, which I think we have been much of the year, too, with some series mixed in here where we’ve made some mistakes.”

The Yankees can certainly use the defensive boost after committing two more errors in the series opener with the Phillies and McMahon should provide that boost.

McMahon will be available to make his Yankees debut on Saturday the 26th, per Aaron Boone.

“This is every kid’s dream. ” McMahon said when talking about the trade. “When you’re nine, 10 years old, hitting wiffle balls in the backyard, you’re picturing yourself in Game 7 of the World Series at Yankee Stadium. It’s gonna be very cool.”

More to come.
