THE BRONX, NY — Anthony Volpe has been a polarizing figure for Yankee fans this year for both his poor offensive performance, but also his defense that has taken a step back this season, commiting an American League-leading 19 errors on the season.
In fact, in the eight games played in September, Volpe is 2 for 21 with 0 walks and 11 strikeouts. His at-bat qualities have been stunningly poor over the past few days in particular. If he was at least making the pitcher work and not seeing results, that’s baseball, but striking out on three or four pitches constantly and then whatever this bunt attempt was last night (and he popped one up foul earlier in the at-bat on a 2-0 pitch):
You would think if Volpe as not being productive with his bat, he would be making good plays with his glove..right?
Aaron Boone told Talkin’ Yanks on Tuesday that Volpe would get a day off during the Tigers series (today), and during the Red Sox series at Fenway park. If Volpe can’t constantly be in the lineup for the biggest regular-season games of the season, I don’t know how he can be guaranteed a starting job heading into next season, even though sources indicated that the Yankees are still high on Volpe and barring something unforeseen, he will be back next season.
“Obviously, been a tough stretch for Volp offensively here.” Boone said on Wednesday. “He’s a really talented, impactful player when he’s going well. Hopefully, we can still get him to that point.”
Here is the full lineup for tonight’s game vs. the Tigers. You can watch the game on Amazon Prime Video or listen on WFAN.
